This Systeme.io tutorial shows you how to build a small but complete lead-generation funnel: a visitor lands on your page, submits an email address, reaches a thank-you page, and enters an automated email campaign.

The goal is not a complicated website. It is one working path that you can test, improve, and later use for a checklist, mini-course, service enquiry, or digital product.

Create a Free Systeme.io Account

The free plan currently supports a small starter setup, including up to 2,000 contacts and three sales funnels. Check the official pricing page before relying on any limit because plans can change.

Before you start

Prepare four simple items before opening the page editor. This prevents you from wasting time changing templates without a clear message.

  • One audience: for example, first-time digital-product creators.
  • One problem: for example, not knowing how to collect the first email subscribers.
  • One free resource: a checklist, template, short guide, or mini lesson.
  • One next step: read a guide, reply to an email, book a call, or view an offer.
Example used in this tutorial

Free resource: “10-Step Sales Funnel Checklist.” Audience: beginners building their first online funnel.

1. Create your free funnel

  1. Log in to Systeme.io.
  2. Open Sites, then choose Sales funnels.
  3. Click Create.
  4. Name the funnel, select the domain, and choose the currency.
  5. Select Build an Audience.

The Build an Audience option creates the simplest useful structure for this project: an opt-in page followed by a thank-you page.

Screenshot checkpoint

You should now see two funnel steps in the left panel: an opt-in page and a thank-you page.

2. Customize the opt-in page

Choose a clean template, then click Edit page. Keep the first version short. A visitor should understand the promise without scrolling through a long sales page.

Use this simple page structure

  • Headline: “Build Your First Sales Funnel Without Paid Tools.”
  • Supporting line: “Get the 10-step checklist for planning your page, form, email, and follow-up.”
  • Three bullets: what the reader will complete or avoid.
  • Email field: ask only for information you genuinely need.
  • Button: “Send Me the Free Checklist.”

In the page editor, add a Form input and set its input type to Email. A working lead form needs at least one email field.

Add a button and set Action when button clicked to Submit form. For the redirect, choose To the next step so the visitor reaches the thank-you page.

Important

A button that only opens a URL will not capture the contact. The action must submit the form.

3. Build a clear thank-you page

The thank-you page confirms that the form worked. It should remove uncertainty and direct the subscriber to one next action.

  • Confirm the signup: “Your checklist is on the way.”
  • Tell the reader where to look: inbox, promotions tab, or spam folder.
  • Explain the expected sender name and email subject.
  • Offer one relevant next step, such as reading your related beginner guide.

Avoid placing several unrelated offers on this page. The subscriber has just trusted you with an email address; make the experience clear and predictable.

Screenshot checkpoint

Preview both desktop and mobile versions. The confirmation message and next-step button should be visible without awkward spacing.

4. Create your first email campaign

  1. Open Emails, then Campaigns.
  2. Click Create.
  3. Add a campaign name, sender email address, and short description.
  4. Open the campaign and click Create to add the first email.
  5. Choose a clear subject, sender name, sender address, and editor.

Your first email should deliver exactly what the form promised. Use a direct subject such as Your 10-Step Sales Funnel Checklist.

A useful first-email structure

  • Thank the subscriber.
  • Provide the checklist link or the checklist itself.
  • Explain one action to complete today.
  • Invite a reply with one simple question.

Use Save and test before activating the email. Check the links, spelling, sender details, and mobile layout.

5. Connect the form to the campaign

The funnel and campaign will not work together until you create an automation rule.

  1. Open Automations, then Rules.
  2. Click Create.
  3. Add the trigger Funnel step form subscribed.
  4. Select the opt-in page created earlier.
  5. Add the action Subscribe to campaign.
  6. Select your new campaign and save the rule.
Simple logic

When a visitor submits this specific form, Systeme.io subscribes that contact to the selected email campaign.

6. Test the entire funnel

Do not promote the funnel until you have completed the full journey as a visitor.

TestExpected result
Open the published URLPage loads correctly on phone and desktop
Submit a new email addressYou reach the thank-you page
Check ContactsThe test address appears in your contact list
Check the inboxThe campaign email arrives with working links
Repeat on mobileForm, button, and text remain easy to use

Use a fresh email address or remove the test contact before repeating the test. Existing contacts may not reproduce the same first-subscription behavior.

7. Publish and get your first visitors

Share the funnel where the free resource directly solves the reader's problem. Do not paste the link into unrelated conversations.

  • Write one detailed tutorial on your website and link to the checklist.
  • Create three Pinterest Pins, each using a different benefit-focused headline.
  • Turn the checklist into a short faceless screen-recording video.
  • Answer relevant questions and link only when the funnel is genuinely useful.

Measure the small steps first: page visits, form submissions, email opens, link clicks, and replies. Revenue comes later in the chain.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Asking for too much information: start with an email address unless another field is necessary.
  • A vague headline: promise one useful outcome, not “Join our newsletter.”
  • The wrong button action: use Submit form when collecting a contact.
  • No campaign automation: connect the funnel step to the campaign before sending traffic.
  • No real test: preview mode is not enough; complete the published funnel yourself.
  • Promoting before delivering value: send the promised resource before adding optional recommendations.

Frequently asked questions

Can beginners use Systeme.io for free?

Yes. The current free plan is enough for a small starter funnel and email follow-up, subject to the limits shown on the official pricing page.

What funnel should a beginner build first?

Start with Build an Audience. Its opt-in and thank-you structure is easier to test than a multi-page sales funnel.

Why is my form not collecting email addresses?

Confirm that the page contains an Email input and that the button action is set to Submit form. Then test the published page with a new address.

How do I send an email automatically after signup?

Create a campaign, then use an automation rule with Funnel step form subscribed as the trigger and Subscribe to campaign as the action.

BUILD YOUR FIRST VERSION

Create the free funnel, then improve it from real behavior

Start with one opt-in page, one thank-you page, one delivery email, and one automation rule. A small funnel that works is more valuable than a complicated funnel that never launches.
